How to Choose the Right Event Tent Size for Your Gathering

One of the most common questions we get from event planners is: "What size tent do I need?" The answer depends on several factors, but with a few simple calculations, you can determine the right tent size for any event.

The Basic Formula

For seated events with round tables (60-inch or 72-inch), plan for 10-12 square feet per guest. For standing or cocktail-style events, 4-6 square feet per guest is sufficient. For events with a dance floor or buffet area, add 100-200 square feet depending on the setup.

Common Tent Sizes and Capacities

Factors to Consider

Seating Style

Round tables (60-inch) seat 8 guests each and require more space than rectangular tables. If space is limited, consider rectangular tables which can seat 6-8 guests in a more compact arrangement.

Additional Space Needs

Don't forget to account for a dance floor (100-200 sq ft), buffet or food service area (50-100 sq ft), bar (50 sq ft), and a head table for weddings (50-100 sq ft). Add these to your total square footage calculation.

Tent Style

Frame tents have no center poles, giving you 100% usable interior space. Pole tents require center poles and staking, which means you lose some interior space but gain the classic elegant look. Pop-up canopies are best for small, casual events.

When in Doubt, Size Up

It is always better to have a slightly larger tent than to cram guests into a space that feels crowded. A tent that is too small leads to uncomfortable guests and cramped seating. When in doubt, go up one size.
